The Pains of Diabetic Neuropathy

The Pains of Diabetic Neuropathy
January 12, 2019Inland AcupuncturePain Management

Among the numerous complications that may arise from diabetes, diabetic neuropathy is one of the most common. The condition is the result of nerve damage from high blood sugar levels and most frequently effects the extremities of the individual. There is often pain, burning, or numbness throughout the region of the body that has been impacted and it can become a disabling condition if left untreated.

Typically, treatment will focus on slowing the progression of the condition and pain management. Often, the management of pain as a result of nerve damage comes in the form of one, or a combination of, different drug classes including anti-seizure, antidepressant, and even narcotic medications. Studies have indicated, however, that alternate forms of medicine may also offer a benefit when it comes to relieving the discomforts of the condition – acupuncture is a prime example.

A pilot study conducted in 2007 gave indication that acupuncture can be an effective treatment in managing the pain associated with diabetic neuropathy. Of the 47 participants who met the criteria for the study, 21 were administered acupuncture therapy. The remaining participants did not receive any specific form of therapy to treat the ails of their condition.

At the end of the study, 16 of the 21 who received the acupuncture treatments had noted an improvement in lessening the severity of their symptoms. Results were significant enough to suggest that the positive outcomes associated with acupuncture for the treatment of pain related to diabetic neuropathy confirmed it to be a worthwhile alternative to more traditional methods such as prescription medications.

It is important to discuss any forms of treatment you are considering with your primary care physician or a physician who is a specialist in your condition. Together, they can work with you and your practitioner in devising a treatment plan that is right for you. In doing so, your chances of success with achievable positive outcomes in the management of your condition will be increased exponentially.
