3 Reasons to Take Magnesium

I remember when I first discovered the miraculous effects of taking magnesium supplements. I practiced in a wellness center at the time and one of my colleagues carried a liquid calcium/magnesium supplement. I started suggesting it for my acupuncture patients with restless leg syndrome to help them sleep at night and had some amazing success stories. Eight years later, it is still my favorite (non-Chinese herbal) supplement for patients. Here are three of the reasons why:
- Magnesium affects nearly every system in the body yet most American diets provide less than %50 of the recommended daily amount. Also, absorption of this mineral is blocked by many common prescription drugs as well as soda. Low magnesium is a risk factor for diabetes, osteoporosis, metabolic syndrome, asthma and heart disease.
- Magnesium plays a leading role in muscle relaxation. Studies have shown supplementation helps relieve muscle spasms and cramps, RLS, migraines and fibromyalgia.
- Magnesium is a natural stress reducer. It can be helpful for neurological conditions such as anxiety and depression. Because of this and its relaxing effects magnesium is a great choice for a variety of sleep issues.
You can supplement magnesium with taking it orally or by using magnesium oil on the skin. Epsom salt baths, which are magnesium sulfate, can also help soothe sore and tense muscles.
